Mobile Marketing
I saw an ad on Craigslist yesterday. It was a company that wanted an SEO expert in West Palm Beach Florida. In the ad it said that they didn’t want to “reinvent the wheel.” To me, that meant that they just wanted someone with the same old SEO tactics. No change….static…same ol’ same ol’. That would be a pretty easy job. Not challenging at all.
“Hey let’s build a really neat site with a Flash movie and we’ll get tons of traffic.”
Survey says. BZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
Let’s talk about mobile marketing.
The way to get more traffic to your website is to, of course, have great content that people want to read about. But, you need to pipe in traffic from other streams. This would mean optimizing your website for a mobile phone browser.
Right now most mobile phone browsers don’t support flash. If you have a flash movie on your site…the viewer will go to the next site in their search results until they can get the information on their phone that they can read and see. (There is some talk right now in the industry that phone will support flash in the near future.)
What do I see in the future for mobile marketing?
I see this being used for real estate among other ways. Here’s an example:
Jane is driving around the West Palm Beach area. She sees a nice house for sale. She pulls to the side of the road and pulls out her Android phone. She does a Google search on the address of the house to see if she can find some quick information about the house. Her top search results are the page of the West Palm Beach Realtor who is listing the property. But what Jane sees on her mobile browser is nothing but a page full of slow-loading flash animations that do not load on her phone. Not good.
I know in the future most phones may support flash but for now, I would stay away from it. Don’t get me wrong flash is great but you don’t want someone’s mobile browser to hang.
Mobile marketing is just beginning to surface and create a big impact. When I’m traveling, I use services like Yelp.com on my phone to find local restaurants. If it’s not on Yelp, then you need help.
Just think, you are traveling down the road and you get a text message from a store that says “Hey according to your location, you are right around the corner from our store. Stop in, show this message and get 30% off.”
Something like this is coming soon. This type of mobile marketing would include the use of your mobile’s GPS and a mobile text messaging opt-in. (Talk about advertising that targets and interrupts to catch the eye of the consumer!!!)
What do you think will be the next trends in mobile marketing?
